Deputy mayor suspected of assaulting wife, fleeing country

Deputy mayor of southern city who was under probation for previous assault charges brutally beats wife, then flees country. Police issue arrest warrant

A deputy mayor of a city in southern Israel is suspected of assaulting his wife last weekend, three years after he was banned from the city under restrictive conditions for a similar case.

When the ban was lifted he returned to his home and his position in the municipality and now, he was back to his violent habits – in addition to which he fled the country and most likely evaded a jail sentence.

Last week police were called out to the family home by neighbors who heard screams coming from the residence. Policemen who arrived at the scene found that the wife had been brutally beaten. The couple's son was also present and it is believed he witnessed the event.

The woman, who was rushed to a local hospital to receive medical attention, claimed that her husband had been abusing her for an extended period of time and that he was responsible for her injuries.

When police realized that the deputy mayor was on probation and that he was not at the scene, they checked with Border Police and discovered that the suspect fled the country.

An arrest warrant was issued against the suspect, but will only come into effect when he returns to Israel. Meanwhile, police are examining alternative methods of bringing the suspect back to Israel.

The woman, who has since been discharged from the hospital, is currently residing in a safe location.
