Jaffa affordable housing project to cater to Arab sector

Tel Aviv Municipality announces tender for the construction of 24 apartments that are to be offered exclusively to Jaffa's Arab residents

The Tel Aviv Municipality has announced a tender for the construction of an affordable housing project in Jaffa that would cater exclusively to the city's Arab population.

The winning contractor is to be allotted 900 square meters of land, on which a three-story building with 24 housing units is to be erected.

According to the terms of the auction, which is to remain open until November, each apartment is to be sized roughly 65 square meters.

According to Kamal Agbaria, an Arab affairs advisor to Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai, the specific eligibility criteria for the housing project's future residents are to be set in the next two months. He noted, however, that the homes are to be made available exclusively to long-time Arab residents of Jaffa.

Agbaria claimed that the announcement of a project that is offered solely to the Arab sector is a testament to the municipality and the mayor's support of Jaffa's Arab residents.

Affordable housing in the works

According to the municipality, the city's investment in affordable housing makes up 10% of its budget.

Other such projects include two nine-story buildings and one seven-story building that are to be constructed on the lot that formerly housed the Aliya Market in south Tel Aviv – although only about half of the project's 147 units are to be designated as affordable.

Another such project is in the works in the Shapira neighborhood, and will house 45 affordable housing units.

Under the city's regulations, only individuals or couples who have resided in the city for more than five years, and whose combined montly net income does not exceed NIS 14,000 (roughly $3,500) will be eligible to buy the apartments, which are to cost NIS 160,000 ($40,000) less than their market value. The buyers are also to be subject to age limits that are meant to make sure that the homes are purchased by the city's young couples.
