South America attracts thousands of Israeli hikers every year, with adventures sometimes ending in death or disappearances. The rafting trips in Cusco are especially popular among Israeli tourists.

Most rafting trips are organized by local companies and usually last up to four days. A regular raft can usually seat six people and an additional local tour guide.

This is not the first time an Israeli tourist was killed during a rafting accident in Peru. In 2008, 22-year-old Rishon Lezion resident Tomer Ahuan was killed when he apparently fell off his boat during a rafting expedition in the Apurimac River.
