Three people were killed on Sunday in a road accident
involving a car and a tractor near the Megido landing field junction on Route 65 ('Ruler Road').
Magen David Adom declared the three – 40-year-old parents and their 5-year-old son, dead at the scene of the crash. Another son, a one-year-old, sustained moderate injuries in the accident and was evacuated via helicopter to the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa.
The driver of the tractor sustained light injuries and was suffering from shock. He was evacuated by ambulance to a hospital in the Hula Valley.
The bodies near the jeep after the accident
An initial investigation into the crash revealed that the family who were in a jeep heading towards Afula was hit by a tractor whose driver failed to give right of way to the car.
Road work is being carried out near the scene of the accident with only one lane open in both directions. The 'Ruler Road' was closed to traffic following the accident with police directing traffic.
Yossi Fahima, Deputy Manager of Magen David Adom's Gilboa District, said that the jeep was ripped apart by the force of the hit and was nearly torn in two. "The sight revealed to anyone who passed here was awful. Three of the family members were lying dead outside the vehicle.
"The baby was crying on the floor of the vehicle. The medical team that arrived at the scene took care of him, stabilized his condition and then took him to the airfield to an MDA helicopter from which they transferred him to the Rambam Medical Center," Fahima said.
Some six people were killed in road accidents throughout the country last week. Some 208 people were killed in Israel in road accidents from the beginning of the year. A significant drop compared with 295 fatalities in the same period last year.
