US opposes Palestinian bid for UN recognition

The United States is trying to dissuade Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas from seeking recognition for the PA as a non-member observer state at the United Nations this month. State Department Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said that the US believes the only way for a Palestinian state is through negotiations with Israel.
Earlier this week, Abbas announced the PA will seek UN recognition at the General Assembly. Palestinians now have an observer entity status. (AFP)
