Weapons found in east Jerusalem fridge; 8 arrested

Five east Jerusalem residents, three illegal aliens arrested in police-Shin Bet operation; NIS 250,000, Hamas flags found also in store

Cleared for publication: Eight people including five east Jerusalem residents were arrested on suspicion they manufactured and traded in weapons.

Last month, Police and Shin Bet forces uncovered weapons in a Jerusalem store and arrested five local Israeli citizens and three illegal aliens. A refrigerator was used to conceal weapons and pipe bombs.

Some of the items were stolen and had originated from the West Bank. A vault in the store was found to contain NIS 250,000 as well as Hamas flags and photos of terrorists.

Prime suspects brothers Nazam and Bilal Masswadle denied the charges claiming the weapons were not intended for terrorist activity but for business purposes. Police are still checking what purpose the weapons were meant to serve. The suspects are being charged with possession of weapons.

Police commander Shafi Abu Tarif said police received information on the matter which led to the raid. "The investigation suggests the suspects traded in arms but the uncovered weapons which include pipe bombs set off a red light. We are looking at the terrorist angle as well."
