Some 400 Kurdish prisoners on hunger strike

A human rights group says some 400 people, most jailed for alleged links to Kurdish rebels, are on a hunger strike to demand increased rights for Kurds and improved jail conditions for Kurdish rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan.

Ozturk Turkdogan, who heads the Turkish Human Rights Association, said Monday prisoners in dozens of jails are refusing food, though they are drinking tea and sugared and salted water, and taking vitamins. Some 70 people started the strike on Sept. 12 and others have joined them in the weeks since, he said. (AP)
