Heavy rains kill 22 in southern India

A government official in a southern Indian state said heavy rains triggered by a tropical storm have killed at least 22 people in the past four days.

T. Radha, a state relief commissioner, said the deaths were caused by drowning and house collapses in villages in East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh state where the storm dumped 31 centimeters (12 inches) of rain over the weekend, the worst in the past 40 years.(AP)
