Lawmakers at the Czech parliament's upper house have decided to press high treason charges against outgoing president Vaclav Klaus over his controversial amnesty, an unprecedented move that taints the end of his presidency.
Klaus infuriated many Czechs when he halted court proceedings in several high-profile fraud cases and financial scams as part of his recent amnesty. In Monday's vote, Senators in the 81-seat house, which is controlled by the left-wing opposition, voted 38-30 to file charges at the Constitutional Court. Only the Senate has such power in the Czech legal system. (AP)
