Israeli windsurfers win gold, bronze in Brazil

Lee Korzits takes home her third consecutive first place prize at RS-X World Championships in Buzios; Maayan Davidovich finishes third

Proving the old adage that "good things come in threes," Israeli windsurfer Lee Korzits took home her third consecutive first place prize at the RS-X World Championships in Buzios, Brazil on Wednesday.

For Korzits, who won her first gold medal at the World Mistral Championships in 2003 at the age of 19, the victory was the fourth in her career. Korzits made history by becoming the first female Israeli world champion in any sport, and the youngest surfer ever to win the world title.

And the news from Brazil gets even better for Israel as Maayan Davidovich, another Israeli competitor, finished in third place.

It was a much welcomed return to the winner’s circle for Korzits who surprisingly failed to win a medal in the RS-X World Championships event held last summer at the London Olympics.

Going in to the London Games, Korzits, a native of Hofit in central Israel who was hailed as one of the Jewish state's best bets for a medal, wound up finishing in sixth place.

In 2009, Korzits was told that she would never again be able to surf after suffering a near-fatal accident during the Professional Windsurfers Association’s tour in Hawaii.
