Majdal Shams: Dozens protest soccer matches opposite Israelis

Forty people rally in local stadium against participation of Israeli teams in games; two arrested. Police officer lightly injured

Two residents of Majdal Shams, ages 30 and 50, were arrested on Saturday after protesting against plans to hold soccer games opposite Israeli teams at the local stadium.

 

A group of 40 people demonstrated at the stadium against games arranged by the Israel Football Association. The stadium was empty at the time.

Clashes between the protesters and police saw the Golan Heights police chief lightly injured.

 

Police said they will continue to take a firm hand against rioters trying to stop games from taking place, following an incident which saw protesters storm a soccer field and stopping a match. Seven people were arrested.
