Renowned Israeli architect Ram Karmi dies at 82
One of Israel's leading architects who designed Supreme Court Building, renewed Habima Theatre and Holyland Project passes away
One of Israel's leading architects Ram Karmi has died at the age of 82.
Karmi was famous for designing the Supreme Court building in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv's new Central Bus Station, the renewed Ben Gurion Airport as well as the Holyland project.
Born in Jerusalem in 1931, Karmi fought in the War of Independence and was one of the founders of the Nahal Brigade. He studied architecture at the Technion and later attended London's prestigious Architectural Association School of Architecture.
In the 1960s he worked at his father's firm and together the two planned Tel Aviv's El Al office building and and the Negev Center in Beersheba. He later went on to serve as the Housing Ministry's chief architect.
In 2002, he won the Israel Prize for Architecture. Some of his buildings such as the Supreme Court won him praise while others such as the Habima Theatre and the Holyland Project led to fierce criticism.
