Syria: Mortar attacks near Damascus kill 7 people

Two mortar shells slammed into a Damascus suburb Wednesday, killing at least seven people and wounding dozens, Syrian state media and activists said.

The suburbs around the Syrian capital have been opposition strongholds for most of the 2-year-old conflict. The rebels fighting to topple President Bashar Assad have set up enclaves in the areas, firing mortar rounds into the capital and sowing fear among its residents. (AP)
