Peres: Israel must defend itself

President Shimon Peres commented on the situation in Syria and said that, “In Syria there is no government. In other countries there are civil wars and this does not make us happy.”
“The Jewish people are not a malevolent people,” he added. “We take no pleasure in seeing blood spilled on the streets. We are on an island in the middle of a stormy sea. We must defend ourselves on the island and calm the sea.” (Ilana Curiel)
