2 soldiers suspected of preparing explosives

IDF soldiers constructed lab in Sderot residential building, where they prepared explosive devices, sold them to criminal figures; some of equipment they used allegedly stolen from IDF base

The remand of two soldiers, Meir Turgeman, 20, and Mor Edri, 21, was extended by five days Thursday, after they were arrested for suspicion of preparing explosive devices and selling them to criminal figures.

According to results of a police and IDF joint investigation, the two constructed a lab in a residential building in Sderot where they prepared explosives.

Turgeman and Edri were exposed when an undercover agent bought explosives ready to detonate from them. A raid on their lab revealed suspicious substances that are likely to be IDF property.

"Just the thought of people preparing explosives in a laboratory in the middle of a residential area where innocent citizens live should concern us all," said chief of the Lachish District police Yoram Soffer.

Turgeman's attorney said that her client was cooperative. "He is a soldier with no criminal record," she said, "and I'm sure that police will perform their duties."

Edri's attorney said that his client confessed to some of the allegations but denied others. "Things always seem bleak at first but slowly come to light. I'm sure that after police investigation it will be proved that my client's conduct wasn’t what the police are trying to portray."
