Turkish protester killed near Syrian border; workers launch strike

Abdullah Comert, 22, shot dead in southern Turkey; boy loses eye during protest in Istanbul. Trade union group stages two-day strike to support protests

Upsurge in violence: A protester was shot dead late on Monday during an anti-government demonstration in southern Turkey near the Syrian border, the provincial governor's office said.

 

Abdullah Comert, 22, died in the town of Antakya, the statement said. Television channel NTV reported he was demonstrating to show support for a wider protest that began in Istanbul last week against the policies of Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, and said he was shot in the head.

It was not immediately clear who opened fire at the Antakya rally, the governor's office statement said.

 

Meanwhile, Turkey's Hurriyet newspaper reported that a young boy had lost his eye after being shot with a plastic bullet during the Gezi Park protests in Istanbul. It was further added that the boy had undergone an operation to remove the bullet in his eye.

As the protests continue, Turkey's Confederation of Public Sector Trade Unions (KESK) announced a decision to strike starting at noon Tuesday, in response to the government’s heavy-handed response to the Taksim Gezi Park protests in a move that could see hundreds of thousands of public servants walk off the job.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is currently in Morocco, remained defiant in the face of continuing violence.

 

After arriving in Morocco, he insisted the situation was "calming down" and later noted that "On my return from this visit, the problems will be solved."

A report in Turkey's Hurriyet newspaper suggested that the US Embassy to Turkey has issued a warning to its citizens about potential violence. Meanwhile, White House spokesman Jay Carney said that Washington will continue to work alongside Ankara on such international issues as the Syrian civil war but expressed concern over the situation in Turkey.

"The United States has serious concerns about the reports of excessive use of force by police and large numbers of injuries and damage to property. We call on these events to be investigated and to urge all parties to refrain from provoking violence," he said.

 

The German Foreign Ministry has urged German citizens to stay away from demonstrations, according to German Embassy spokesman Peter Kettner.
