Research reveals Hula frog last remnant of extinct species

None

A breakthrough genetic study by Israeli and European researchers found that the Hula painted frog, an amphibian endemic to the lake Hula marshes which was thought extinct until a specimen was discovered two years ago, belongs to an extinct type of amphibian known until now only through 35 million years old fossils.

"This is a discovery comparable in its importance to the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls," a researcher told Ynet. "The Hula painted frog is a part of Israel's heritage. We're afraid it may become extinct, this time forever." (Erez Erlichman)
