Obama: NSA programs have saved lives

President Barack Obama said lives have been saved by sweeping surveillance programs run by the National Security Agency, scanning phone records and Internet information. Obama said at least 50 threats were averted due to the data gathered. He said those threats were not just in the US but also in countries like Germany.
Obama said both programs are subject to court oversight and are scope limited. He said he believes the US is striking the right balance between national security and civil liberties. Obama spoke at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. (AP)
