10 activists arrested during protest against gas export

Some 200 protesters gather in Jerusalem in protest of government decision to export Israel's natural gas; police arrest ten protesters

Police detained ten activists who were protesting against the export of gas after they blocked a road near the Prime Minister's Residence in Jerusalem.

 

Some 200 protesters gathered in Jerusalem's Zion Square to protest against the decision to export 40% of Israel's natural gas. The police managed to stop the protesters from blocking the route of the Light Rail in the capital.

"We will do everything we can so that the decision is brought before the Kneset," said Michal Shukrun, an environmentalist activist, adding that "for every percent exported, the country will lose NIS 10 billion because later we'll be forced to import more expensive fuels.

 

"What Netanyahu, (Finance Minister Yair) Lapid and Silvan (Shalom, Energy Minister) haven’t told us is that from the remaining quota, they can export to bordering countries," Shukrun added.

 

According to police reports, the forces at the scene were using "reasonable force" in order to keep the protesters from blocking the city's roads.

 

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel is to export 40% of the country's natural gas from offshore wells.
