Global computing giant expanding its range of products in field of server farm management

IBM buys Israeli CSL for $20M

Company developing virtualization tools for server farm management acquired by computing giant following six-year cooperation. 'This serves as proof that successful startups can be established without venture capital funds,' CEO tells Calcalist

Global computing giant IBM, seeking to expand its range of products in the field of server farm management, is acquiring Israeli company Computing Solutions Leaders (CSL) which was co-founded by entrepreneurs Sharon Chen and Amir Glaser.

The purchase price is estimated at some $20 million, which will all go to the two entrepreneurs who invested a total of $1 million in the company.

CSL specializes in virtual management of particularly large server farms, usually consisting of thousands of servers. The company has developed a graphic interface which connects to IBM's virtualization system and can assist in the management of all aspects of the server farm – from network management through storage to a metadata interface which provides an overall picture of the entire farm.

CSL has been working in cooperation with IBM for six years now, with business relations between the two companies growing stronger in the past three years. CSL's systems have been installed in some 20 server farms IBM is active in.

'We built a successful company from scratch'

"This serves as proof that successful startups can be established without venture capital funds," CSL CEO Sharon Chen told Calcalist, refusing to comment on the deal's financial details.

"Had there been a fund involved here, the company may have been sold for a higher sum, but in the 2009 economic crisis I would have been ordered to cut my manpower.

"Through the personal funding from myself and development manager Amir Glaser, we managed to buy ourselves a state of peace for years and build a successful company from scratch," Chen added.

The company currently employs eight workers in Herzliya, who previously worked in Diligent Technologies which was acquired by IBM in the past, EMC, the IDF's Center of Computing and Information Systems and Unit 8200.
