Gunmen overran an Iraqi army checkpoint and then shot up a trailer packed with policemen breaking their Ramadan fast, killing a total of 14 troops in the country's restive western Anbar province, authorities said Thursday.
The strike happened at sundown Wednesday as the troops were marking the end of the first day of fasting during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Militants have killed more than 2,000 people in attacks since the start of April. Gunmen launched their assault on the army checkpoint near the town of Barwana, according to town mayor, Meyasser Abdul-Mohsin. (AP)
