Committee: Municipalities can divest from semi-private schools

The Knesset's Education Committee has passed in a second and third reading an amendment to the National Education Law which forces local municipalities fund non-official but State recognized education; a category of institute which includes mostly haredi and semi-private schools.
In light of the amendment's passing, municipalities will be allowed to implement consideration when considering if to fund these types of institutes. MK Amram Mitzna, who initiated the move, claimed it was the first in many steps intended to strengthen the national education system. (Shahar Chai)
