Eliyahu to High Court: Petition against me undemocratic
Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu submitted a response to the High Court in regard to a petition filed against him in the effort to disqualify him from consideration for candidacy to the Chief Rabbinate. The petition, by MK Issawi Farij (Meretz), stated that Eliyahu was unfit for the position due to "racist statements."
In his response, Eliyahu argues that the petition is an attempt at sterilizing the democratic process; that it was premature to discuss the issue before he had even been selected; and that the petition was based on newspaper clippings taken out of context. (Aviel Magnezi)
