Ireland: president approves abortion in life or death cases

Irish president Michael Higgins signed into law Tuesday legislation allowing women to undergo abortion in extraordinary cases in which there is risk to the mother's life.
The legislation, first to allow abortion in any case in the Catholic country, was approved two weeks ago amid national outcry over the death of a pregnant woman who was denied the right to a life-saving abortion due to the country's innate Catholicism. (AP)
