Chelsea Handler faces Nazi family ties

Jewish American comedian breaks into tears on episode of 'Who Do You Think You Are?' after discovering her grandfather served in German army during World War II

Jewish American comedian and E! talk show host Chelsea Handler has discovered that her family has ties to Nazi Germany.

The discovery took place during an episode of genealogy documentary series "Who Do You Think You Are?", in which different celebrities go on a journey to trace their family tree.

That’s when Handler found out that her grandfather served as a soldier in the German army during World War II.

She later spoke about her German grandparents and broke into tears.

"Whether or not he agreed with Hitler, he was serving in the Germany army," Handler said about her grandfather. "He was taken as a prisoner of war at some point to America, where he stayed for several years . . . When he went back to Germany he was very eager to come and take his family and move them back to the United States.

"My German grandma definitely spoke about her life during the war way more than my grandfather did," the star added.

Handler's mother immigrated to the United States with her parents when she was 19 years old. Handler's father is Jewish and she was raised in a Jewish home in New Jersey, but decided to explore her German roots as part of the show.
