The newspaper The Washington Post reported that 2 weeks ago, officials in the US government, with the assistance of the EU and Persian Gulf officials, were close to reaching an agreement between supporters of Mohamed Morsi and the Egyptian army, which would have ended protests in the country, ahead of talks between the parties.
According to the report, Mohamed ElBaradei, deputy to temporary president Adli Mansour, was unable to convince Minister of Defense Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, regarding the agreement. The Egyptian army rejected the agreement and ordered security forces to disperse the demonstrations. (Ynet)
