White House: Obama will not pay 'ransom' to end debt crisis

US President Barack Obama and Republican House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner spoke by telephone on Friday afternoon and agreed to continue talks aimed at extending the US debt limit and reopening the federal government, a Boehner spokesman said.

However, Carney noted that Obama's stance is that "the US cannot pay a ransom in exchange for Congress doing its job." According to the White House spokesperson, Obama appreciates the Republican offer, but that the threat of default should not be linked to budget talks. (Reuters)
