The Tarqumiyah council head explained the girls - all related - were with their families, who were picking olives in a nearby field.
According to him, the girls went away when their parents' attention was diverted, and accidentally locked themselves in the vehicle, where they were found unconscious by their relatives.
The girls were rushed to two hospitals by Red Crescent ambulances - where four of them were pronounced dead.
Palestinian security services are investigating the possibility the girls were left in the vehicle by their parents.
