Port stops Colombian ship from unloading infested bananas
The Port of Ashdod stopped a Colombian boat from unloading a shipment of infested bananas in Israel. The 250 ton load became infested after a glitch in the onboard refrigeration system. The boat’s agent wanted to destroy the bananas in Israel. Prior to arriving at Ashdod Port, the ship had attempted to dock in Cyprus, where they were also turned away.
“We avoided a disaster to the banana industry in Israel,” said an official from the Agricultural Ministry. (Matan Tzuri)
