Knesset votes to raise marriage age from 17 to 18

The Knesset's Constitution, Law and Justice Committee have voted to authorize a bill raising the marriage age to 18. The bill was proposed by Meretz Chairwoman Zehava Gal-On, Coalition Chairman Yariv Levin (Likud) and MK Dov Khanin (Hadash) and effectively raised the marriageable age from 17.

Justice Ministry officials said that Justice Minister Tzipi Livni is contemplating whether to amend the new law so that Rabbinical judges will be allowed to offer special exemptions and marry couples aged 16-18. (Moran Azulay)
