A rare fossil of two insects copulating discovered in China
A fossil of two small insects copulating, dating back to 165 million years ago, was recently unearthed in China – the oldest of its kind ever discovered, scientists said on Wednesday.
Fossil insects found mated are rare, so the current state of knowledge about the positions of copulation and orientation of the sexual organs at the beginning of evolution is limited, said paleontologist Dong Ren of Capital Normal University in China, who led the discovery, which was published in the American scientific journal PLOS ONE.
