New US guidelines in statin use for cholesterol lowering

New US guidelines on heart health recommend stronger measures for patients at high risk of heart attack or stroke, including more aggressive therapy with cholesterol lowering drugs.

The guidelines issued by two leading US medical organizations on Tuesday could lead to more extensive use of high potency statins. Among the groups deemed most likely to benefit from higher intensity statin treatment were: Patients with known heart disease; those with LDL above 190; patients with type 2 diabetes aged 40 - 75. The Israel Heart Society tends to follow most American recommendations. (Dr. Itay Gal, Reuters)
