The cabinet unanimously approved the bill submitted by Interior Minister Gideon Sa'ar, by which municipal leaders accused of criminal activity will be suspended from office.
According to Sa'ar, "the law reflects the appropriate balance between integrity and public confidence in the local government and the democratic dimension inherent in the direct elections for municipal leaders." The bill is expected to be brought before the Knesset plenum next week. (Attila Somfalvi, Omri Efraim)
