Police noted that they had received complaints against the suspect's violence in August, when "the woman claimed the husband was threatening her," Moriah District Police Chief Haim Blumenfeld said.

However, according to the police chief, "when police arrived at the scene, the woman refused to cooperate." Officers nevertheless arrested the man and called the woman in for questioning the next day. "She gave her testimony, but several days later reneged on her version and the daughter bailed the father out of custody. We have not been in touch with them ever since."

Following questioning, the suspect admitted to have murdered his wife following an argument. Police is to request an extension of his remand on Monday. The suspect is still in hospital.

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is marked on Monday, November 25. So far, 2013 has seen 14 women murdered by male partners. Some 150 women were murdered by their male partners in the past decade.

Israel is operating 14 shelters for abused women, harboring over 600 women and 850 children.
