Fresh fighting in S. Sudan as peace deadline nears

Published: 12.31.13, 11:47 / Israel News

Fresh fighting erupted in the contested capital of Jonglei state as rebels in South Sudan moved to retake control of Bor from government troops, a military official said Tuesday, signaling both sides were far from reaching the cease-fire deal that regional leaders hoped would be struck before the end of the year.

Government troops on Tuesday morning fought renegade forces loyal to former Vice President Riek Machar as well as a pro-Machar tribal militia known as the "White Army," said military spokesman Col. Philip Aguer. (AP)
