Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon "one of the greatest generals that the Jewish people and the Israel Defense Forces had ever known."
Netanyahu said that Sharon belonged to the generation of founders and the generation of independence.
"Israel's independence was dependent on a generation of Jewish fighters that renewed our heritage of Jewish heroism in the land of Israel, and Sharon played a central role in building this heritage.
Netanyahu said he didn’t always agree with the former prime minister, but it was clear Sharon was always thinking of the best for Israel.
"Arik was real and pragmatic," he said. "His pragmatism was entrenched in deep emotion for the State and ingrained in profound sentiment for the Jewish people."
Netanyahu finished his remarks saying Sharon's legacy will always be remembered.
"Your unique contribution to the security of the country will be engraved in the history books of our people. Your memory will be secured forever in the heart of the nation." (Attila Somfalvi and Moran Azulay)
