Iran ambassador dispute unites Dem, GOP senators

WASHINGTON - The congressional outcry over allowing a former hostage-taker involved in the 1979 seizure of the US Embassy in Tehran to serve as Iran's ambassador at the United Nations has created an odd political couple.

A congressional aide says Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer has given tacit support to Republican Sen. Ted Cruz's legislation to deny a visa to a UN applicant if the president determines the individual has engaged in terrorist activity.

The bill was prompted by Iran's anticipated selection of Hamid Aboutalebi to be the next Iranian ambassador to the United Nations. Aboutalebi was a member of a Muslim student group that held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days. (AP)
