Sources close to Rouhani: Iran considering different UN envoy
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is considering appointing another ambassador to the UN, after the United States denied visa to Hamid Aboutalebi, who was involved in the 1979 hostage crisis at the US embassy in Tehran, sources close to Rouhani told Asharq Alawsat on Sunday.
The sources said Rouhani wishes to avoid an escalation of the situation with the American administration.
According to the report, one of the nominees for the position is Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, who said Saturday Tehran was going to challenge Washington's refusal to grant visa to Aboutalebi. (Roi Kais)
