Al-Jazeera reporter held in Egypt appeals to judge

CAIRO - One of the Al-Jazeera English journalists now held by authorities in Egypt made a rare appeal to the judge from outside of the defendants' cage, at the end of which the judge wished him a "happy" World Press Freedom Day.

In his brief plea Saturday, Canadian-Egyptian acting Al-Jazeera bureau chief Mohammed Fahmy stood directly before the judge's bench. Fahmy said journalists have to speak to all sides to do their jobs.

Fahmy, along with Al-Jazeera employees Peter Greste and Baher Mohammed, face charges of being part of a terrorist group and airing falsified footage intended to damage Egyptian national security. (AP)
