South Africa's de Klerk: Israel must reach peace

Published: 05.28.14, 20:09 / Israel News

The last president under white rule in South Africa has suggested Israel risks heading toward apartheid if a peace deal with the Palestinians is not achieved.

F. W. de Klerk, along with the late Nelson Mandela, brought about an end to decades of apartheid rule in South Africa, jointly winning the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize.

De Klerk said calling Israel an apartheid state now was "unfair." But he said without a two-state solution, Israel may have one state for both Israelis and Palestinians.

"The test will be (does) everybody living then in such a unitary state, will everybody have full political rights? Will everybody enjoy their full human rights?" (AP)
