DAMASCUS - Syrian President Bashar Assad was assured Wednesday a landslide victory in the disputed presidential election denounced by the Europeans and Americans.
While the final results are expected Thursday night, the official Syrian press has already announced a "very high" participation and the "victory" of Assad, 48, in power since 2000.
According to al-Watan, a newspaper close to the government, the rate of participation "should be between 70 and 80 percent" in seven of the fourteen governorates of the country ravaged by more than three years of war. (AFP)
