Ben-Eliezer announces end of candidacy amid investigations
Benjamin Ben-Eliezer of the Labor party announced his withdrawal from the presidential race Saturday amidst investigations of reports that he received millions of shekels for unknown purposes during his tenure in the Knesset.
Suspicion was aroused when Ben-Eliezer spent at least NIS 8 million on an apartment in Jaffa. Reportedly, the presidential candidate cashed a check worth hundreds of thousands of shekels at a bureau de change.
It is also suspected businessman Avraham Nanikashvili, who is in partnership with Jacky Ben-Zaken that was questioned earlier this month in the Ashdod port probe, gave Ben-Eliezer large sums of money.
