Egypt to release journalist after 100 days of hunger strike

CAIRO - Egypt's Prosecutor General has ordered the release of an Al-Jazeera journalist who has been on hunger strike for more than 100 days to protest his prolonged detention without trial.

A statement from the prosecutor's office on Monday said Abdullah Elshamy and 12 others will be set free, citing "health conditions."

ElShamy was detained on Aug. 14 while covering the violent dispersal of a sprawling sit-in by supporters of ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, which saw hundreds killed and thousands wounded. (Associated Press)
