Police begin evacuations and arrests of asylum seekers protesting near Sinai

Published: 06.29.14, 19:33 / Israel News

Police forces began forcefully evacuating and arresting hundreds of African asylum seekers who have been protesting at Nitzana near the Egyptian border for the last two days.

The African's have demanded recognition as refugees and release from the Holot detention facility where Israeli authorities have placed them under "open arrest". Residents of the facility are required to sign in three times per day. Current law states that failure to do so will result in their arrest at a closed prison. (Omri Ephraim)
