Syrian troops advance in Aleppo

BEIRUT - Syrian troops were advancing inside Aleppo on Monday in what appears to be an attempt to lay siege to rebel-held parts of the country's largest city, activists said.

Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said that reinforcements, including elite government forces and allies from Lebanon's Hezbollah group, arrived in the city recently.

Abdurrahman and an activist based near Aleppo who goes by the name of Abu al-Hassan said Monday's fighting is concentrating near an army base that rebels captured two years ago.
