A 72-hour ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza went into effect at 8am Friday morning after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he had accepted a joint proposal from US Secretary of State John Kerry and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.

The announcment of an impending ceasefire was made overnight between Thursday and Friday and included that Israeli troops will remain in the Gaza Strip over the 72 hours of calm.

Envoys representing both Israel and the Palestinians are expected to arrive in Cairo for talks on a more stable truce during this time.
