Syrian army takes town outside Damascus

Syrian government forces have taken full control of a town southeast of Damascus, a TV station run by the pro-Damascus Lebanese group Hezbollah reported on Thursday, a gain that would deal a blow to rebels who had held it for more than a year.

The town of Mleiha lies on the edge of the eastern Ghouta region near Damascus airport, a mix of farmland and small towns that has formed a base for rebel fighters. They have been surrounded by President Bashar al-Assad's forces for more than a year. There was no way to independently confirm the report.
