Turkey policeman jailed for almost 8 years over protester killing

A court in the Turkish capital Ankara on Wednesday jailed a policeman for seven years and nine months after convicting him of shooting dead a protester during 2013 anti-government protests.

The trial of policeman Ahmet Sahbaz over the killing in Ankara of 26-year-old protester Ethem Sarisuluk was seen as a crucial test of the authorities' willingness to prosecute police brutality.

The delivery of the verdict sparked tumultuous scenes in the courtroom with supporters of the victim shouting "murderer state" and slamming the judgement for being too lenient, an AFP correspondent reported.
