The right hand man of the the Islamic State (ISIS) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed Thursday in an air raid by the Iraqi army in the north of the country, announced the Chief of Staff, General Babaker Zebari.

"Iraqi warplanes conducted today (Thursday) an operation that resulted in the death of Abu Bakr al-right arm Baghdadi, known as Abu Hajr al-Suri," General Zebari told AFP, adding that the strike in the province of Nineveh had been "launched on the basis of specific information" and that "the target had been reached."

No confirmation from independent sources could be obtained immediately on the death of the jihadist chief, as the area where the strike was conducted between Mosul (the capital of Nineveh) and Tal Afar, is not controlled by the Iraqi army.
