Soldier wounded by stray fire from Syria

IDF soldier on Golan Heights hit by cross-border fire, evacuated to hospital in northern Israel.

An IDF soldier was wounded Monday evening in light condition from a bullet fired from Syria, north of kibbutz Ein Zivan. He was evacuated to a hospital in northern Israel.

The IDF is investigating the incident given that no explosions were heard from the Syrian side of the border and there was no information regarding firefights in the area.

In recent days, Syrian President Bashar Assad's military has attempted to push back the rebel advance made by Jabhat al-Nusra, as they near the border with Israel.

The al-Qaeda-linked group has achieved a number of significant victories in the past few weeks, including the capture of the Quneitra border crossing.

Over the weekend, the warring sides continued to clash on the outskirts of Quneitra, after the rebels declared a new campaign to control the area.

In recent weeks, while the fighting has raged on the other side of the border fence, stray mortar rounds and artillery shells have exploded in Israeli territory. The most recent incident occurred last Thursday – when the air raid siren was sounded in the northern Golan Heights.

Afterwards, IDF search operations discovered an artillery round north of Ortal. Israel responded by firing a Tammuz missile at a Syrian military position. The military identified a direct hit.

Two weeks ago, two Israelis were injured by stray fire from Syria – an IDF officer and a 52-year-old civilian. The IDF responded with artillery fire on Syrian army positions.

The IDF has said that it sees the Syrian Army as the authority responsible for all cross-border fire into Israel.
